Since 2002, Mark has released 4 studio albums and 2 live recordings. His second album, the acclaimed Ghosts, was named 2005′s Album of the Year by the Irish VoiceBillboard Magazine said Ghosts “evokes Van Morrison, particularly his early-1970s era,” and called it “a collection of superb songs delivered with a quiet intensity that will endear itself to listeners.”

Mark’s second live recording,Songs: Vienna was just released in December 2013. It was recorded over one night at Casino Baumgarten in Vienna with Mark’s band Grainne Hunt and Mark Penny.

We Are Aerials Single Out Now

WE ARE AERIALS is the new project by Derry songwriter, Conor McAteer.

Mainly known as a solo artist, having released two acoustic albums (Pirates in 2007 and 2011’s The Devil in the Ether) and played support to the likes of Billy Bragg, Declan O’Rourke and Bell X1, McAteer decided he needed to explore different genres and bigger productions on Voeckler, the first WE ARE AERIALS album.

The result is as diverse an album as you are likely to hear, ranging from hook-heavy Garage Rock songs like Pile ‘em Up and Chewing on my Sleeve to more introspective moments like We Are Chemicals and There is a Darkness.

“The album felt very different to what I had done before and while I play very stripped back versions of a couple of the songs at acoustic gigs, the way they’re written seemed like a separate project to the stuff I’d put out under my own name which is kind of rooted in classic late 60s singer-songwriter folk. Voeckler is a bit more adventurous from a sonic point of view.”

Eclectic but accessible, WE ARE AERIALS should appeal to fans of Elbow, REM, The National, Radiohead and Kenna.

The single, We Are Chemicals, is out today and is available from all good digital stores.

Voeckler is out on 21st February.

Last year the group played ArcadeCon to an audience of 2,000 people and return as headliners this year. Recently signed to Putting Out Records in Dublin, the band will perform at the Ballsbridge Hotel as part of ArcadeCon 2013 which runs from Thursday 4th July to Sunday 7th July.

Riot Tapes Release Cardinal Rules

Dublin four piece Riot Tapes are back with the follow up to ‘the Key’. ‘Cardinal Rules’ is available from iTunes and other good digital stores now.

Riot Tapes are: Elaine Doyle (lead vocals, guitar), Chris O’Brien (guitar), Robert Crosbie (bass) and Dave Ivers (drums).

Since their formation in late 2010, the band has gone from strength to strength. Hotly tipped as one of Ireland’s next big exports, the group have received record label interest from America and the United Kingdom.

Riot Tapes released their debut single ‘Photograph’ in Ireland in April 2011 and it went straight in at number five on the Irish download charts. The band then dove head first into recording their debut album. Primary recording took place in Windmill Lane, Westland Studios as well as a variety of other studios in Dublin, London and even Nashville, Tennessee.

In October 2011, Riot Tapes featured heavily on The Apprentice. ‘Photograph’ was used as part of the national television and radio advertising for the series. The band made an appearance during one of the episodes when the teams were given a task to find the best in Irish music – Riot Tapes were chosen by both teams!

Whilst recording the album the band made a number of live appearances in Dublin. These appearances included headline shows in Whelan’s, the Workman’s Club and the Grand Central. In late 2011, Ham Sandwich invited Riot Tapes to be their special guests at their homecoming and New Year’s Eve gigs (the latter taking place in the Village in Dublin.).

During 2012 the band played a few shows in Northern Ireland as well as a handful of low key gigs across the country to road test the material for the album – however, they spent most of last year in the studio working on their much anticipated debut. The record has since been mixed by Rogers Masson (Marilyn Manson, Vintage Trouble, Daughtry) in Nashville.

Now in 2013, the results of the hard work Riot Tapes have put in are clear. In February of this year the band released ‘the Key’. The radio only single gained airplay on Today FM, 2FM, 2XM and a number of regional and local stations right across the country. Featuring strings by members of the RTE Symphony Orchestra, ‘the Key’ was the Play Irish Single of the Week in March.

The sound of the band’s follow up ‘Cardinal Rules’ compliments the words of Hot Press when they said that Riot Tapes are “destined to break into the mainstream,”. A number of dates for the ‘Cardinal Rules’ Irish tour will be announced in the coming weeks.

‘Cardinal Rules’ by Riot Tapes is available from iTunes and other good digital stores now.

Former Revs Drummer Releases Debut Single

Ex-Revs drummer releases debut single

Mickey D, the former drummer of Donegal indie rock band The Revs, has just released his first single since the band took a break of ‘indefinite length’ in 2007. The track titled “Someday You’ll Be Mine” is available to download now and hit the no. 1 spot on the Irish iTunes charts last Friday.

Although Mickey D has been session drumming and doing studio work for other artists, he has only recently begun playing his own original music again.

After a difficult period in his life Mickey D started writing lyrics for the first time. And this, his debut solo single, is the first time Mickey D has ever recorded a vocal. In addition to singing and writing the song, Mickey D plays every instrument on the recording.

Recorded in his hometown – the small village of Kilcar in Donegal – Mickey D has recorded and produced the single on a low budget with his friends helping with engineering, production, manufacturing and artwork. “There’s no real budget for the single; I’ve relied on a lot of help from friends to get it out there. It’s come from a very DIY attitude.”

With the Revs, Mickey D played Slane Castle, Oxygen (on the mainstage three consecutive years), Reading & Leeds, and SXSW. They also supported the likes of Muse, Stereophonics and Kaiser Chiefs and toured the world twice, releasing a string of hits in Ireland along the way.

Now Mickey D is back in 2013 with his debut solo single which was launched to a packed out Kilcar House last Saturday night. The track hit the no. 1 spot on the iTunes Irish download charts and has been creating a buzz all week.

Someday You’ll Be Mine is available from iTunes & all good digital outlets now.

Emily Whelan – ‘Mmmm Song’

Donegal’s Emily Whelan releases the “Mmmm Song” to iTunes today.

Pic by Marie Carr Photography

The “Mmmm Song” is Emily’s third release, following on from the success of her debut single “Life” (2011) and her 4 track EP “Fred” released in 2012.

With the single “Life” Emily was playlisted on national radio throughout summer 2011. The track was chosen as Single of the Week on BBC Radio Ulster and gained airplay on Today FM, RTÉ and countless other regional and local stations.

Known for her hard work and determination, Emily is no stranger to the live circuit. Emily spent most of last year touring the length and breadth of Ireland.  Last year, Whelan supported Jack Lukeman throughout his sell-out “27 Club” tour – playing in full capacity venues across the country including the likes of the Olympia Theatre, Dolan’s Warehouse, Everyman Palace Theatre and Derry’s Millennium Forum.

Emily has also supported the likes of Rory & the Island (Rory Gallagher, ex-Revs), The Henry Girls, Bagatelle and Aslan to name only a few.

Influenced by the likes of Alanis Morissette, Skunk Anansie, Tracy Chapman, KT Tunstall, James Morrison, Declan O’Rourke and Gemma Hayes, Emily’s ambition for this year is to reach more people with her music.

Emily is set to do just that with the release of the “Mmmm Song”, more touring, and a follow up EP and single later in the year.

To promote the release of the “Mmmm Song” Emily will be playing the following tour dates in June with more to be announced:

Fri 21st: CluBeo, Leo’s Tavern, Donegal

Mon 24th: Bennigan’s, Derry
